HA can be used for both osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. One small study included 16 patients with osteoarthritis of the knee or hand who were taking COX-2 inhibitors or other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs. Eight patients received two 1,000 mg hydrolyzed type II collagen capsules daily and eight were given a placebo. After two months of treatment, the group receiving the collagen reported significant improvement in pain, range of motion, and swelling—whereas the placebo group showed no significant changes.
